The Missing Picture event at the Art Theatre

THE MISSING PICTURE

By now you might already know that the Academy Award-nominated The Missing Picture is making its theatrical debut at Long Beach’s Art Theatre. It’s a very big deal and an honor that Rithy Panh’s masterful reimagining of his experience surviving the Khmer Rouge is premiering so close to the city’s Little Cambodia community, and perhaps you even attended the red carpet screening on Saturday night. How cool was that?

While every viewing of the surreal, stylish, and powerful documentary is a visual treat and emotional journey, another special event will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 1. The director will be in town and on hand to present the movie and participate in a post-screening panel with producer Catherine Dussart, French narrator Randal Douc, and composer Marc Marder.

Guests providing extra perspective on Panh’s groundbreaking film will include singer Chhom Nimol from Dengue Fever, rapper/filmmaker Prach Ly, Hawaii International Film Festival’s Creative Director Anderson Le, and Giant Robot magazine co-founder Martin Wong. Moderation will be supplied by interTrend’s own Julia Huang.

As if that weren’t enough, there will be a short dance performance by the Khmer Arts Academy and a casual reception afterward. And, oh yeah, the movie is blowing away audiences and racking up awards around the world. There is no extra cost for this special screening, so I suggest purchasing tickets in advance at the Art Theatre site. See you there!

Architecture for Dogs goes to New York

Fresh off a successful launch in Tokyo, Architecture for Dogs is about to receive the spotlight once again, this time in New York City at Purina’s Better with Pets Summit on Tuesday, November 19. After packing her bags, AFD co-founder Julia Huang answered some questions about it for us.

What do you know about the conference that you’ll be presenting at in New York?
Not a whole lot, aside from the fact that there are so many subject matter experts with Dr. before their names. But the premise of this Purina-facilitated conference about how our lives are #betterwithpets resonates strongly with me.

In Japan you were involved in a few group discussions. How are you approaching this solo gig?

The good news is the time slot is shorter than the two-hour panel discussion in Japan. The bad news is I don’t know if there is going to be enough time to share the best of Architecture for Dogs: how it came about, what’s happening even as we speak, and what we have in store for the future. But I am going to try to communicate as much as possible Kenya Hara’s vision, how world class architects responded to the challenge, and how the world is responding.

Were there any surprising moments or new realizations in Japan that you can share with us?
More like a strong reinforcement of what we knew all along. A lot of people respond strongly to all things dogs and all things architecture.  Combine the two and we basically have a powerful platform for people to communicate with each other.

Any interesting fans of the project that you’ve come across ?
A hip-hop rapper with his dog’s named tatooed on his arm.


Is Renzei going to make the trip to New York?
No, I really wish he could but I don’t think he would take 6-hour cross-country trip very well.

Architecture for Dogs opens in Japan

Imprint Lab‘s Architecture for Dogs crew recently returned from Japan and their photos of the installation and opening events are very cool. Doors opened on October 25 at Toto Gallery•Ma in Tokyo.

The display of species-specific doghouses curated by Kenya Hara had previously shown in Miami and Long Beach. The Asian debut included new pieces, including 12 explorations of Hara’s D-Tunnel concept.

The gallery also invites visitors to submit their own doghouse designs. The sketches, which are updated daily at architecturefordogs.com, are wonderful. So is the new book.

There was also talk at Design Hub in Tokyo Midtown, featuring Hara along with contributors Atelier Wan, Torafu Architects, Sou Fujimoto, and Elien Deceuninck of MVRDV.

Imprint and interTrend’s own Julia Huang participated in the opening events, too, and was documented by several Instagram accounts.

Architecture for Dogs goes to Tokyo

Imprint Culture Lab’s wildly successful collaboration with Japanese designer Kenya Hara, Architecture for Dogs, will open in Tokyo opens this Friday, October 25 at TOTO Gallery·Ma in Tokyo. For the Asian debut of the species-specific doghouses designed by world class architects and designers, most of the Japanese contributors will be in attendance, as will Elien Deceuninck from MVRDV (Netherlands).

The third stop of the show (which follows Miami and Long Beach) will also feature more than 10 new variations of Hara’s D-TUNNEL, expanding upon the MUJI creative director’s notion of “a device that mediates between the scale of the human and the scale of the dog.” Hara will also take part in a symposium with architect Kengo Kuma and Imprint/interTrend’s own Julia Huang on Saturday, November 2.

While the museum has stopped issuing lottery applications to attend the symposium (winners will be announced on Thursday), the exhibit will be open and free to attendees from Friday, October 25 through Saturday, December 21.

Julia Huang defends Asian Americans vs. Pew Research on The Huffington Post

Since interTrend’s Julia Huang criticized the recent Pew report on social media’s exclusion of Asian Americans, the Washington DC think tank has responded by stating that it’s just too much work to include such a small group in their research. Julia’s response was posted on The Huffington Post this afternoon:  “Pew’s response has only highlighted the glaring problem that for 20 years Asians have been regularly excluded from all of their research studies, not just this latest one on digital aptitude.”

An editorial by interTrend’s own Julia Huang can be read on the Fox News site today. In the piece, she picks apart this month’s Pew report, “The State of Social Media Users,” which compares segments of the American population’s usage of social media yet neglects Asian Americans. “Why would Pew publish a comparison of social media users that doesn’t track Asian-Americans?” she asks. “Perhaps it might be that Asians’ social media habits score so high against other races that it might not be an interesting or alarming comparison.”

Not Just Happy But Important: Thoughts on Lunar New Year from Julia Huang in USA Today

Posted this afternoon on USA TODAY’s website and slated to run in print as early as tomorrow, interTrend’s own Julia Huang asserts in an opinion piece that the Lunar New Year is no token holiday. The worldwide celebration is not only a focal point in international business but it’s also the best time of year for the U.S. to cut the trade deficit with China. “As more and more people celebrate the Lunar New Year,” she sums up, “it is proof that Asians are not just an economic convenience but an integral part of the American life.”
