UC Regents Widen Applicant Pool, Anger Asian-Californians
A new UC admission policy will ostensibly widen the minority applicant pool, but Asian-Americans worry relaxed admission policies will conversely make it harder for them to get in.
I myself was a student in the public University of California system when affirmative action was first voted out, and remember one controversial argument made for the ban: that affirmative action would hinder Asian-American acceptance into the more popular programs. Asian-Americans now represent the largest demographic of all UC schools… except at my own alma mater, UC Santa Cruz, which at the time had the least selective admission policy and made grades as well as clothing…optional.
I knew then that this issue would just get more heated with the years, but who knew Asians would so quickly be part of an un-diversity movement?
Also, I guarantee this statement will come back to haunt its writer:
UC officials adamantly deny the intent is to increase racial diversity…
Yikes.
